Anike Agbaje-Williams is recognised as a pioneering figure in broadcasting, making history as the first person to appear on Nigerian television. Her career began in 1955 at the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) in Lagos, where an unexpected opportunity to read the news secured her a permanent role as a staff announcer.

In 1959, she became a foundational member of Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) in Ibadan, Nigeria’s first television station. With impeccable diction and a remarkable memory, she rose through the ranks to become a producer and later director of programmes. She played a key role in promoting Nigerian culture on television, ensuring that traditional dances, music, and fashion were central to programming.
