Music was more than an art to Fatima Muhammadu Kolo, later known as Fatima Lolo; it was a vessel of history, a bridge between past and present. She did not simply sing, her voice carried the collective memory of the Nupe people.
At a time when traditional music was often sidelined, she carved out a space in Nigeria’s cultural fabric. Her influence reached beyond village gatherings to royal courts and national festivals, where she represented the Nupe Kingdom Emirate with pride. Presidents and dignitaries took notice, and in recognition of her contributions, she was awarded the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by President Shehu Shagari.
Lolo’s poetry, rich with the wisdom of her people, also found its place in published collections alongside the works of other remarkable women. Through her enduring art, she ensured that Nupe traditions would not be forgotten.
