A landmark victory in 1983 reshaped Nigeria's political world when Franca Afegbua defied expectations to become the first woman elected to the Nigerian Senate, representing Bendel North under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN).
Despite scepticism about her chances against established male politicians, she launched an ambitious campaign with a formidable grassroots movement within her Etsako community. Leveraging her recognition from winning an international hairstyling competition in 1977, she built a strong support base, particularly among women. In August 1983, she narrowly defeated the incumbent senator, John Umolu, securing a groundbreaking win.
After her Senate term was cut short by a military coup, Afegbua remained a successful businesswoman, managing multiple ventures. Though she largely stayed away from public office, she remained an influential figure in her community, supporting social initiatives and advocating for women's empowerment.
