Michael Olutusen Onafowokan helped shape the identity of Nigerian architecture as a pioneer of Tropical Modernism, weaving environmental awareness into every design. From natural ventilation to green spaces and climate-sensitive structures, his buildings responded to their surroundings with intelligence and grace.
Among his standout projects were the Cocoa House in Ibadan, West Africa’s first skyscraper, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and the Western Regional Secretariat in Ibadan.
Before founding the Onafowokan Cityscape Group, which still carries on his legacy, he served as Chief Regional Architect in the Western Region.
