Ifeoma Okoye’s journey as a writer began in her teenage years when, as editor of her college magazine, she wrote to inspire fellow students to do the same. She went on to become a leading voice in African literature, exploring the social challenges faced by women and children.

Her literary career is marked by award-winning works that reflect everyday realities. Behind the Clouds (1982), her debut adult novel, received recognition from the Nigerian National Council for Arts and Culture in 1983. This was followed by Men Without Ears (1984), which won the Association of Nigerian Authors' Best Fiction of the Year Award in 1985. Her children's book, Only Bread for Eze (1980), received a prize at the Ife International Book Fair, while her short story, Waiting for a Son, won the African Regional Prize in the 1999 Commonwealth Short Story Competition.
