Nnete Okorie-Egbe, a princess from Akwete, emerged as a formidable leader during the 1929 Women’s War in Nigeria. She played a key role in uniting women across Opobo, Ibibio, Andoni, Ogoni, and Bonny to challenge the British colonial administration.
The protest erupted over plans to impose taxes on women, and her leadership was central to mobilising the masses to resist injustice. Her strategic efforts helped force the colonial authorities to abandon the tax policy, though she was imprisoned for two years as a result of her activism.
