Recognising the need for girls’ education, Oyinkansola Abayomi founded the West African Educated Girls’ Club in the 1920s, laying the groundwork for the establishment of Queen’s College, Lagos, in 1927. She played a vital role in the school’s formative years, as its only Nigerian founding staff member.

Abayomi was a formidable political force. In 1944, she co-founded the Nigerian Women’s Party, which advocated for greater female participation in politics. She also led the Nigerian Girl Guides, fostering leadership and civic responsibility among young girls.

Her influence extended into public service, where she held key positions in the Lagos government and championed women’s rights. She was knighted as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).
