In 1957, Simisola Johnson became one of Nigeria’s first female dentists, alongside Grace Guobadia, earning a Bachelor of Dental Surgery from Durham University. But dentistry was just the beginning.

A fierce advocate for women’s rights, she stepped into politics, serving as Minister for Social Development and Culture during Nigeria’s Second Republic. She forged partnerships between the government and women’s organisations, ensuring their voices shaped national policies. In 1985, she led Nigeria’s delegation to the Third World Conference on Women in Nairobi, pushing for gender equality on the global stage.

Her leadership stretched across public service, finance, and civil society. She chaired Allied Bank, led the Lagos branch of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), and became a fellow of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
