Ayo Ogunsina, better known as Papalolo, helped redefine Nigerian comedy with a style that mixed music, satire, and physical theatre. Trained by the legendary Hubert Ogunde and seasoned by tours across West Africa in the 1960s, he brought a new kind of sketch comedy to the stage. As a founding member of the Awada Group and later Jester International, he teamed up with Tajudeen Gbadamosi (Jacob) and Kayode Olaiya (Aderupoko) to create Nigeria’s first comedy albums on vinyl, including the crowd favourite, Pa Jacob Is Ku.
Their popular TV show, Owo Tabua, aired on stations like NTA Ibadan, LTV 8, and OGTV, drawing Yoruba-language satire into the national spotlight. With his sharp timing, expressive face, and unforgettable Papalolo character, Ogunsina bridged theatre, radio, and television.
