Bola Johnson Was a Gifted Storyteller

Bola Johnson brought humour and social commentary to the dancefloor as a Highlife musician, trumpeter, and bandleader. After cutting his teeth with Eric Akaeze’s band in Ibadan, he formed the Easy Life Top Beats in 1968. His recordings, including Asewo Ajegunle Yakare and Lagos Sisi, blended Highlife, Funk, and Afrobeat with sharp, Pidgin-English storytelling.
He was also a standout radio personality, voicing numerous characters in comedies, and writing the well-loved Wakabout column for the Lagos Weekend newspaper. With his multilingual fluency and comic flair, Johnson became a cherished voice in Nigerian pop culture.
