Duro Ladipo was a seminal Nigerian dramatist who transformed Yoruba theatre by weaving traditional music, dance, and folklore into powerful stage productions.

In 1962, he founded the Mbari Mbayo Club in Osogbo, which he later developed into a full cultural centre for young artists honing their craft.

His acclaimed plays, including Oba Moro, Oba Koso, and Oba Waja, drew deeply from Yoruba history and mythology. Oba Koso gained international acclaim at the Berlin Arts Festival in 1964 and the Commonwealth Arts Festival in London in 1965. He wrote other notable works such as Suru Baba Iwa and Tanimowo Iku, some of which were adapted for television.
