During the 1980s and early 1990s, Gani Odutokun emerged as a leading Nigerian painter and thinker who helped shape contemporary art in West Africa. Drawing and sculpting from childhood, his artistic range would come to include graphics, painting, illustration, architecture, and costume design.
Odutokun’s work explored the tension between accident and design, blending surrealism with African motifs to reflect on politics, identity, and existence. Paintings like Dialogue with Mona Lisa and The King Shares a Joke with His General were layered with symbolism and wit.
He was a key figure in the Zaria Art Society and the Nigerian modernist movement, and founded The Eye Society and The Eye journal to promote intellectual discourse in art and design.
