John Chukwu helped define what it meant to be funny in Nigeria. He was an all-round entertainer who worked as a comedian, actor, writer, broadcaster, musician, and graphic artist.
He rose to prominence in the 1970s with film roles in Amadi, and Bisi, Daughter of the River, while also anchoring The Bar Beach Show on NTA. He was involved in other productions including Kusini, Ajani Ogun, and Trees Grow in the Desert, and published a novel titled Destined to Live.
By the 1980s, Chukwu had become a pioneer of stand-up comedy, performing at major events and launching the Klass Nite Club in Ikeja, where his sharp wit and magnetic stage presence lit up Lagos nights.
