Semi-Colon Left a Bold Mark on Afro-Rock

Formed in the 1970s under the direction of Lasbrey Ojukwu, Semi-Colon carved out a unique place in Nigerian music with their bold fusion of Afro-Rock and Psychedelic sounds. Their 1976 album, Ndia Egbuo Ndia (Afro-Jigida), offered an experimental counterpoint to the rising tide of Afrobeat, swapping brass sections for searing electric guitar riffs and echoes of vintage rock.
Songs like Nekwaha Semi Colon and Slim Fit Maggie blended Cuban grooves with Afro-Pop rhythm, revealing a band unafraid to push musical boundaries. Though their moment in the spotlight was brief, Semi-Colon’s daring style left a lasting impression, helping to define the edges of Nigeria’s sonic imagination.
